Who Are the DVSA

Who Are the DVSA and What Gives Them Their Power? If you are a drive within the UK, particularly if you are the driver of a lorry, bus, or van, then you have probable come across the DVSA at some point. You may have seen them at one of their roadside checkpoints, had your tachograph inspected, or even been waved into a lay-by by one of their officers wearing a high vis jacket. The question raised is who are these people? Why do they have the power to pull you over, check your brakes, or demand to see your driving hours? Are they the police? Traffic wardens? Government inspectors? The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) hold a massive role in keeping Britain’s roads safe, they are also backed by some serious authority. Within this blog, I will break down exactly who the DVSA are, what it is that they do, and where they get their legal powers from. It doesn’t matter if you are new to the industry or just want to know your rights and responsibilities better, this is...

🚛 Law in Logistics: What Every Driver and Business Should Know ⚖️ When most people think about logistics, they probably just picture trucks driving down the highway or packages arriving at their doorstep. But there’s a whole lot happening behind the scenes — especially when it comes to the rules and laws that keep everything safe and running without a hitch. Whether you’re an HGV driver, working in a warehouse, or running a logistics business, knowing the legal side of things is really important. 🛣️ What’s “Law in Logistics” Anyway? My First Year in Law: What I’ve Learned (So Far)

My First Year in Law: What I’ve Learned (So Far)   As I wrap up the first year of my Accelerated LLB, I thought I’d take a moment to look back at the core subjects I’ve studied so far. Balancing the course with full-time HGV work hasn’t been easy, but getting stuck into the substance of law has made the long nights and motorway services study sessions worth it.   Here’s a quick breakdown of what I’ve covered – and what I’ve taken from each module.     📚  Academic and Professional Legal Skills   This was all about the foundations: how to read cases properly, how to use legal databases, how to build an argument, and how to reference sources without losing your mind. It might not sound exciting, but this module gave me the tools to survive everything else.   What stood out most was how legal writing is an art in itself – clear, precise, and structured. As someone who hadn’t written essays in years, this helped me sharpen up and start thinking like a law ...

Balancing Life Behind the Wheel and Behind the Books: Why I Study Law While Driving HGVs Full-Time

Balancing Life Behind the Wheel and Behind the Books: Why I Study Law While Driving HGVs Full-Time   When people find out that I’m studying a full-time accelerated law course as well as  working full-time as a Class 1 HGV driver, their reaction is usually the same:  “How do you do both?” The honest answer? It’s tough. But it’s also one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done.     Life at 44 Tonnes and 100 Cases   My days often start between 1–4 AM, doing my pre-vehicle checks in the freezing cold or the pouring rain, then climbing into the cab of my lorry while most people are still fast asleep. The shift could lead anywhere, I might be heading up the M6, driving through London, or waiting hours at a depot. Then once the shift ends – often 12, sometimes 15 hours later – it’s time to swap the steering wheel for statutes, casebooks, and legal journals.   This isn’t a typical student life. There is never a lazy morning or midweek lie-in. Sometime...

Welcome to Law Talk With Callum

Welcome to Law Talk With Callum  My Legal Journey from the Cab to the Courtroom   Hey everyone, and welcome to Law Talk With Callum – my corner of the internet where I share my journey, thoughts, and insights as I work my way into the legal profession.   My name’s Callum, I’m 21 years old, and by day (or more often, by  very  early morning), I work full-time as an HGV driver, running long shifts in a 44-tonne Class 1 HGV. It’s a demanding job – early starts, long hauls, and plenty of road time – but it’s also taught me a lot about discipline, patience, and resilience. All qualities I now bring into my studies and future legal career.   Alongside work, I’m currently studying Law full-time on an accelerated degree. It’s intense, but I genuinely love it – especially subjects like criminal law, the law of tort, and law and the state.   Before this, I completed an HNC in Digital Technology, and an Access to Higher Education Diploma in Social Science, w...
